November, 2007
Currently the ute has no
steering in it. I decided to get rid of the crappy steering column that was in
it for 2 reasons.
1. The indicators would not have self cancelled, making it unroadworthy and;
2. The indicator stalk was bogged onto the column and looked very untidy. (see
pictures above)
I'm replacing it with a Commodore VS column. The good news is that the indicator
stalk when removed from the column and bog was fine and fits properly in the new
housing and the wiring was already done from CAE so don't have to rewire
anything.
I will have to make a modification to make this fit the rack, but that shouldn't
be that hard for someone with a lathe.
With the mock up of the VS Column going well, it is such a nice setup to
install. If anyone is ever thinking about installing a modern column this is the
way to go.
All that is left to do now is make spacers for the steering bolts to the dash,
and have the shaft machined to fit the rack and pinion in the ute.
I am using both the indicator stalk (and indicators now cancel) and wiper stalk
from the VS, so I am going to move the nasty wiper switch that I installed into
the original wiper switch hole. I am even going to use the VS steering column
surround.
In the surround picture you can see the hole for the ignition barrel and keys, I
am going to fill that with fibreglass.
UPDATE ON CONSOLE
Console is still at the trimmers to be trimmed, Matt the trimmer is trying to
find time to trim it (a little busy this time of year)
